In Season 2 things pick up pretty much right where we left off last year, with Frankie (Lily Tomlin) in a guilt-spiraling turmoil over sleeping with gay former husband Sol (Sam Waterston) as the two attempted to pack up their old house together. The guilt is eating away at Sol, too, but he can’t bring himself to come clean when fiancé Robert (Martin Sheen) is found keeled over in the kitchen after a heart attack.

Season 3 starts out with their unabashed openness: Grace and Frankie have started their own business, manufacturing vibrators for the elderly, and they’re not going to let social hang-ups about sex or ageist business practices get in their way.

Season 4 starts in a very different place than it ends up — literally and figuratively. Frankie is living in Santa Fe with her boyfriend, Jacob, and Grace has a new roommate: Sheree. Sheree is a manicurist, but she helps Grace sell the vibrators that Grace created with Frankie. This kind of insertion into Grace’s day-to-day life ruffles Frankie’s feathers, but the three of them work it out without anyone getting too up in arms.

in Season 5, the best friends feel their time is running out. These time-tested broads recognize how history repeats itself. They know many of life’s moments come back around in one way or another, and the weight of the past can be crushing. Their only twist on Matthew McConaughey’s tortured musings would be that they want the circle to continue; instead of feeling trapped in a constant loop of pain, they’d look for ways to keep things spinning.
